Annapurna
Range
Annapurna is a
Sanskrit name that means “Goddess of the Harvests”
or “The Provider”. The Annapurna range situated in
central Nepal has one of the most dominating
Himalayan panoramas. Placed just north of Pokhara
the range from west to east consists of Annapurna
South Face (7,219m), Gang (7,647m), Gangapurna
(7,455m), Annapurna III (7,555m), Annapurna IV
(7,525m) and Annapurna II (7,925m).
Annapurna is an enormous Himalayan massif and the
tenth highest mountain in the world. In 1950, it
became the first 8,000-meter mountain to be
successfully climbed. Located to the east of a great
gorge that cuts through the Himalayas by the Kali
Gandaki river, this mountain range has glaciers on
its western and northwestern slopes, which drain
into this gorge.
Annapurna Circuit
Annapurna is a Sanskrit name that can be
translated as Goddess of the Harvests or more simply
The Provider. Annapurna is an enormous Himalayan
massif, the tenth highest mountain in the world,
located east of a great gorge cut through the
Himalayas by the Kali Gandaki River. This three-week
trek takes you around the entire Annapurna massif
along ancient trade routes. The highest point of the
trek, Thorung La (5416 m), is crossed after about 10
days of trekking. Across the pass we enter Gandaki
Valley with the colorful temple and the shrines of
Muktinath, an important pilgrimage place for both
Hindus and Buddhists. Further down the valley we
pass the Kali Gandaki gorge at 2200 m. With
Annapurna I (8091 m) on one side and Dhaulagiri
(8167 m) on the other, only 38 km apart, this is the
deepest gorge in the world. After soaking in the hot
springs (Tatopani) we enjoy the famous views from
Poon Hill before returning to Pokhara.
