Kala Patter Trek
A trek to Kala Pattar and Everest Base Camp starting
in Jiri after an eight hour drive from Kathmandu.
The first week of the trek goes through the lower
valleys between Jiri and Lukla (2800 m). This is the
route used by the early expeditions to Everest and
is a journey from the Hindu farming communities in
the hills past the Sherpa Buddhist villages of the
highlands before we reach the glacial wilderness of
Everest Base Camp. The long approach will ensure
that you will arrive well acclimatized in Namche
Bazaar (3440 m). We spend a day exploring Namche
Bazaar, the colorful Sherpa capital and the biggest
of Nepal's highland bazaars. After Namche we visit
Khumbu's most famous monastery in Tengboche (3867
m), idyllically set on alpine meadows below the
beautiful Ama Dablam (6856 m) with Everest and
Lhotse dominating the skyline to the north-east.
From Tengboche we move on to the high pastures of
Pheriche (4240 m) and Lobuche (4930 m). We climb
Kala Pattar (5600 m) from Lobuche and stop in Gorak
Shep (5160 m) on the way. The next day we visit
Everest Base Camp. The return follows the same route
back to Lukla for an exciting flight back to
Kathmandu. This trek is highly recommended if you
have the extra time.
Everest High Passes Trek
The crossing of the Kongma La, Cho La, and Renjo La
passes can link the five major valleys in the
Everest region. When combined with ascents of Kala
Patar and Gokyo Peak, this is perhaps the ultimate
Everest experience. We stay in comfortable lodges in
the valleys and camp away from the main trail during
pass crossings. From Kathmandu we fly to Lukla and
follow the classic Everest trail through Namche
Bazaar, Thyangboche and Dingboche to the Kongma La
pass surrounded by dramatic views of Ama Dablam,
Makalu and the Lhotse/Nuptse face. From the pass we
descend to the Khumbu glacier and then ascend Kala
Pattar for breathtaking close-up views of Mount
Everest and a sea of other Himalayan giants. We
traverse the glaciated Cho La pass to Gokyo, where
we explore the valley and climb Gokyo Ri to enjoy
more excellent mountain views including another
angle of Everest, and Cho Oyu on the Tibetan border
to the north. We then bear west to scramble across
the Renjo La, dramatically back-dropped by the
Everest range, to enter the Bhote Kosi valley, where
we trek through yak grazing pastures to Thami, and
back to Lukla for a traditional farewell with our
Sherpa crew.
