Kanchanjunga Region
Crossing over
Mirgin La & trekking to Ghunsa
Sub-course that connects major courses of the north
and the south and crosses over the pass commanding a
close look at the imposing Jannu. This is a
recommended course for visiting Pangpema in the
north of
Kanchenjunga if you wish to do so after
trekking to Ramze in the south. It crosses over
Mirgin La , includes camping at Shielele, and leads
to Ghunsa. You can also reach Ghunsa via Lapsang La
(5,070m), which is further north of Mirgin La, but
it is not recommendedable since there is a bigger
possibility of getting altitude sickness. This is
not a technical difficult course, but the first
day's journey is very long and requires rations. The
reverse course is not recommendable either, because
Ghunsa, the starting point, is about 720 meters
lower than Yalung, making it a hard, long climb.
Trekking to
Pangpema along the Ghunsa Khola
This course will first go on
the west mountain flanks of Surke Danda as far as
Chirwa. From Chirwa, it goes up the
Tamur River,
branches off, and goes along the Ghunsa Khola until
you reach the farthest village of Ghunsa. From there
on, you will be camping in the kharkas and
experiencing a dreir climate than the south side of
Kanchenjunga. The final destination is Pangpema, the
base camp on the north side of Kanchenjunga. In the
village along this course, you will be meeting
various people such as the Rai, Limbu, Gurung,
Sherpa and Tibetans. Most villages are small and
some have a mixed population of these people. The
terraced fields are characteristic of this area and
they are very impressive.
Kanchanjunga
Base Camp Treks
From Kathmandu you fly to Taplejung via Biratnagar
and commence trekking up Tamur valley along one of
the oldest trade routes in the Himalaya. Walking
through lush rhododendron forests you climb on into
high alpine terrain beyond the village of Gunsa. A
camp established high above this village that
provides astounding views of Kanchanjunga's South
face. Returning to Gunsa you then cross the Lapsung
La Pass and trek on to the Yalung Glacier and
Kanchanjunga Base Camp. This really is still
exploratory trekking and you must be prepared to
take the trail as it comes. But to look up at
Kanchanjunga's towering south face is easily reward
enough for your efforts.
Retracing your
route to Taplejung you return to Kathmandu, having
become one of few who have experienced this
remarkable and little known region of Nepal.
