Langtang Range:
Langtang Trek
The high and isolated region of the Langtang valley
is called "the valley of glaciers". The trek starts
with a four-hour drive from Kathmandu to the
picturesque village Dhunche with great views of
Ganesh Himal, Manaslu and Annapurna II on the way.
From Dhunche we spend four days hiking through this
beautiful valley until we reach Kyanjin Gompa (3800
m) . On the way we have great views of Langtang
Lirung (7246 m) to the north, Gang Chhenpo (6388 m)
and Naya Kangri (5846 m) to the south and Dorje
Lakpa (6966 m) to the east. At Kyanjin Gompa we
spend a couple of days exploring the area visiting
several excellent viewpoints including Tsergo Ri
(5033 m). We return to Chisopani in the Helambu
region via the holy lakes of Gosainkund.
For a more
challenging version of this trek we recommend
crossing the Ganja La (5106 m) into Helambu. Good
equipment and basic mountaineering experience is
needed for this crossing.
Langtang Helambu Trek
The Langtang and Helambu region lies north of
Kathmandu and is easily accessible by road from
Kathmandu. Langtang is a narrow valley along Nepal
border to Tibet with Langtang Lirung (7246 m) to the
north, Gangchenpo (6388 m) and Naya Kangri (5846 m)
to the south and Dorje Lakpa (6966 m) to the east.
Helambu is south of Langtang and only 75 km north of
Kathmandu. Helambu is popular as a short trek
because of its relative low altitude (below 3500 m)
and easy access from Kathmandu. The Helambu trek can
also be included in a Langtang trek via the holy
lakes at Gosaikund (4300 m) and across the Ganja La
(5106 m). Nepal's second largest national park, the
park has healthy forests of rhododendron, fir, blue
and chir pine and birch. The wildlife in the park
includes leopard, musk deer, Himalayan black bear,
rhesus and langur monkeys and the endangered red
panda.
Langtang Classical Trekking
Just after the monsoon, this trek gives superb views
of the great peak of Langtang Lirung (7246m) which
dominates the upper valley and straddles the Tibetan
border. In spring time it is an ideal place to spot
birds and flowers of Nepal. According to a legend, a
lama following a runaway yak discovered the valley,
hence the name -Lang (Tibetan name for YAK), Tang
(more currently "Dhang" means to follow). There are
good opportunities for moderate climbing excursions
here, you should allow some extra days for
exploration of the extensive glacier system. Our
return route takes us past the holy lakes of
Gosainkunda, an important place of pilgrimage, and
over a high pass that brings us almost to the edge
of Kathmandu itself.
